May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! As we approach days of basking in the summer sun and more time spent outdoors, it’s important we remember to take care of and protect our skin from too much sun exposure, which can lead to the most common type of cancer, skin cancer.
As your trusted spray tan team, we want to bring awareness to other ways you can take care of and protect your skin.
First, choosing spray tanning over tanning beds is a safer and healthier way to achieve a gorgeous glow. Tanning beds expose tanners to harmful UV rays that are known to invoke the onset of many skin cancers.
Second, wear sunscreen, even if you aren’t planning a long day in the sun! According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, regular sunscreen use won’t entirely protect you from skin cancer, but regular use of SPF 15 reduces “your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by about 40 percent, and can lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.” The Skin Cancer Foundation also notes that SPF 15 is best for daily wear, while SPF 30 and higher are ideal for prolonged periods of outdoor activities.
Cancer.net recommends applying sunscreen before going outside and applying it every two hours, but every hour if you’re swimming or sweating. Cancer.net also recommends using a lip balm with SPF in it and wearing a hat and sunglasses among other measures.
Don’t skimp on sunscreen and other protective measures regardless of how often you sunburn. Do your part to take care of this protective sheath, and you will reap the benefits now and later in life.
Don’t forget, our sunless tans are sure to do their part in helping you achieve a luxurious tan without the UV damage!
